Anne Geddes [article written in 2021]

When I was at school there were so many diaries, pencil cases and notebooks with the beautiful, peaceful, dreamy images of children by Anne Geddes. For me she has always been a sort of magician, with a secret aurea surrounding her and her work. The type and quality of pictures she took are awesome, even although I prefer a more natural approach. I always wondered how she managed to work with very young children. I have had only 4 or 5 shoots with newborns and every time it was extremely challenging.

The cover of the issue of L’Uomo Vogue of February is of Anne Geddes. Feel free to browse through their website to check it:

Below, an interesting interview to the photographer:

Emi & Ami [Parma, 2020]

I have known these little ones for a while. I met Tomomi (their lovely mum) in 2015 and took pictures to Ami. Then Emi joined the family’s crew one year later: the first time I saw her, she was only 6 days old! Tomomi and I stayed in touch and we currently enjoy meeting up for a photo- shoot 2 or 3 times a year.

On this occasion, my ambitious idea & hope was to take a couple of professional, smart portraits that might eventually bring me some recognition. But Ami and Emi’s view point was slightly different…they wanted to have fun and play around! Actually they were both excited to join us in the studio and to be the shoot’s stars. Ami, the little one, was the leader of the show and is a natural poser!! I quickly realised that, more or less, I was at their mercy.

I believe that at the end of our shoot our expectations matched. I am quite hard on the quality of my work but I really think that some of their pictures are beautiful and these little sisters are themselves and are behaving in a spontaneous way. It was brilliant to watch them playing around and being so lively.

Enjoy!

Leonardo & Mattia [Parma, 2019]

I remember clearly the morning when I met Elisa for a coffee at Cappelli and she told me that she was expecting for the second time. There was also Mattia with us, her eldest son. On this occasion I saw a beautiful sparkle in Elisa’s eyes, she was radiant! Little Leonardo (Leo!) was in a hurry so he was born a month early, but this did not create a flaw, as he was just perfect and very much loved by his parents and a proud big brother!

I was delighted to have Elisa and the kids in the studio for a quick Welcome session to little Leo, who was, more or less, cooperative! Enjoy these beautiful memories!

“If we wandered around this world with the typical carelessness of a child who falls asleep in the middle of a crowd, this society would not even be able to worry us: no more than it would be able to affect the long and deep breathing of the child who is sleeping”- Christian Bobin

Annasole & Martin [Parma, 2018]

In the spring 2018, Annasole had a baby brother, Martin. His birth was a good occasion to organise a little photographic catch-up in order to take some portraits of both of the kids. This indoor session was smooth: Annasole was kind of an “habituée” of the studio and honestly, there was no outcry from the side of the little one! Thank you Elisa & George for trusting my capabilities! Enjoy these lovely memories!

Alice & Edward [Parma, 2017]

Culling has always been the most painful aspect of the editing process, and it was even harder in this shoot, as I loved dearly almost ALL the shots that were taken in the studio! Alice was just being herself, a gorgeous and exuberant girl, whilst little Eddy was cheeky and cuddly as ever possible! Enjoy this happy family’s photo-memory!

Ami & Giulio [Parma, 2017]

Ami and Giulio did not know each other, their moms did not know each other, but I knew their moms. I knew that if I asked them to bring their kids to the studio they would be happy. And they were indeed. It was something to observe how two children who had never met each other before, also thanks to their uncomplicated and playful nature, were able to stand together, to play and to have fun together in front of the camera. And the outcome was anything but obvious!! Thank you Francesca and Tomomi for sticking to my plan!

Elena & the kids [Parma, 2017]

I have known Elena almost all my life and it has been a pleasure to see her family grow in number…to reach the number 5! Yes, 5 boys!! In the below pictures, you will see 2 of them, Pietro and Emanuele, with the super-speedy appearance of Riccardo who was not exactly in the mood for being photographed that day. And besides all, with a mum like theirs, fun is guaranteed!

Livia and Amelia [Parma, 2016]

They say that a super mum and a super dad will pave your way and I cannot disagree with that! It was a lovely experience for me to take some portraits of this well-knit family. Elisa and Vittorio are amazingly caring and attentive parents and their two little princesses adored them! Both Livia and Amelia displayed enchanting, bubbly and strong personalities, apart from being extremely cute!

Portraits by Paolo Melegari [Parma, 2015]

One of the upsides of having an other photographer take your pictures is being able to observe how he works, plus, I have always loved the studio’s environment, as this is one of the things that makes me feel the call of the wild! I have discovered that, even in tight spaces, you can make miracles and the outcome can be remarkable, as in this case! I cherish these images taken by incredibly experienced and tasteful photographer Ph. Paolo Melegari: feel free to drop by his shop or admire part of his portfolio at his storefront!

Twice as nice [Parma, 2014]

The world of twins has always fascinated me, although working with young children is a double challenge! These cuties were conceived one after the other, they lived in their mom’s belly together, they came out and … Look, they are different, not only physically but they also displayed different personalities! One was a little more introvert, the other a little bolder, one dared to take a few steps alone, the other needed his mother’s support. For sure, they were both mama’s boys, to whom they gave great satisfaction! Once they realised that the studio was not a mystery place, they put on big smiles and the hard part of the job was achieved, even though I was left with the doubt of…having taken out too many toys!
