Elena seen by ph. Martina Biasetti [Parma, 2022]

Martina started following me on Instagram, I followed her back, that’s how it started. We did not know each other even though (weirdly enough) we are both from Parma and we were born the same year! I checked her portfolio and loved ALL of her shots, so I asked her to take some portraits of me.

We met one evening at 6 pm in some fields outside the city. It was a clear blue night, with a powerful dry heat (33 celsius!). I enjoyed posing for her. Being a photographer myself, I decided literally “to shut my mouth” and follow her lead. She was in charge & I was the subject. I was impressed by her preparation. She had clear ideas of what she wanted. Also, she had already prepared part of the set  before we started to shoot (a romantic chair on the side of the field, with a white sheet hung from a tree) . She is  polite, determined, clear-minded and massively focused on details.

At the end of the session I was dying to get a sneak preview but did not dare to ask. A couple of days ago I received a selection of 18 photos & collages. I cherish all of them: they are so elegant! I find that there is a mix of poetry and painting in them! This is what fine art photography means to me.

I truly believe that she captured my inner-self. These shots are delicate and I consider myself a gentle soul. They have an inch of sweetness and malinconia. They are powerful in their beauty…and I have discovered a sort of charme of the 50s in them! Last but not least, they make me feel so young!!  Thank you, Martina!!

Nara [Edinburgh, 2022]

In the spring of 2022 I had the pleasure to take some portraits of Nara, a young student and artist, shy and talented. We gathered at the Royal Botanic Garden and in my mind I related the spring’s blossoming that was happening with Nara’s young age and current stage of life. Thank you for trusting my photographic skills, young lady, I wish you the Best of luck!

Re-editing Stefano’s pictures [Parma, 2022]

Being an artist implies talent, however there can be differences of opinion regarding preferences in editing! Being a photographer myself, I wonder whether it is “ethical” to edit the pictures of an other photographer, but as both Stefano and I are good friends + are both photo-amateurs, he was happy to shoot these portraits of myself on the original RAW images, in order to allow me later to take control on the editing phase…and my editing’s outcome follows:

Floriane [Edinburgh, 2021]

Last November I had the immense pleasure to catch up with an old friend. We hand’t seen each other since 2010. Flo (Floriane) came to visit me me in Edinburgh from Toulouse. We met in 2006 at the library of the University of Tours, during my Erasmus year, and we became friends immediately. I guess it was a matter of empathy, artistic connection and a good vibes exchange. We always stayed in touch during the following decades!

Flo is one of the bravest and more optimistic people that I know. In the past 10 years she lived and worked in China & South Africa. I couldn’t believe that this time we would spend a couple of days together in bonnie Scotland!! The weather was reasonably dry and of course we managed to slip in a quick portrait session at the Botanics. Needless to say…she is a BEAUTIFUL subject to work with!

Thule [Colorno, 2021]

Working with my camera allows me to know people in a deeper way and I absolutely love this aspect of photography. Also, sometimes I discover that I really like the person who is posing in front of me, as shown in the photos below! I have known Thule over a lifetime: she is just one year younger than I am and we went to the same high school in Parma. This portrait session was a mutual occasion to get to know each other better and I have the feeling it created a much deeper bond in our friendship.

Thule is exactly how you see her: she is a steadfast and loyal person, and also an elegant woman (an hardcore adept in fashion & jewelry!!) with a truthful soul. She is honest, down-to-earth and reliable.

The whole shooting experience was successful beginning with the location’s choice (well played, Thule!!) the beautiful Reggia di Colorno, to the weather and the light (we picked a warmish September’s afternoon with a powerful light) and most of all we got along well, identifying a proper theme for this shoot: “classic elegance”. Enjoy her portraits and if you scroll down to the end you will find two videos related to this session!

Laura [Parma, 2021]

It was a very warm day in late September, and the shadows created by the trees in Cittadella almost became the protagonists of this shoot. I have known Laura for many years and have worked with her on several occasions in the context of photography, always with a great deal of satisfaction. However, the results of this shoot are unique, perhaps that was due to the atmosphere or to the autumn light and colours, or maybe just because of her elegant and discreet beauty, that brought everything together and made the whole thing harmonious!

Catrìona [Edinburgh, 2021]

I took these portraits of Catrìona in September 2021. We gathered in her gorgeous, elegant flat, close to the Edinburgh city centre. Catrìona is the kind of friend who stays with you for life. We met when we were Erasmus students in France, back in 2006. She was from the University of Stirling, I was coming from the University of Parma. We gathered for dinner with other students and started chatting. We stayed in touch ever since, albeit sporadically, until 2017 when I moved to Edinburgh. At that point, she also became a point of reference for me.

Catrìona is an artist. She is honest, open, generous, reliable, active, brave. Gifted with a deep sense of friendship, she is romantic, a geisha and a samurai together, calm and intense, somehow she is a pioneer. I love her and I wish her all the BEST!! That day she was dog-sitting Estelle, that happily agreed to become part of the shooting!

Noemi [Edinburgh, 2021]

I met Noemi in 2019, via a mutual friend, and we got on well! Impossible not to cherish her: she is charming! She is young and brave, sweet and strong, delicate but determined, romantic and lively, adventurous but stable, and with beautiful big eyes!

Even although that Saturday morning the weather did not exactly spoil us, we found a couple of gorgeous green spots for some elegant “country-styled” shots! I will share a secret with you…she is shy but she can be an incredibly good poser!! Thank you, Noemi!

Sandy [Edinburgh, 2021]

Sandy is a friend and I asked him if I could take some portraits because he looked like a suitable model for my style of photography!! He has beautiful facial features, deep-blue eyes and a cute, growing beard. He reminds me vaguely of actor Philip Seymour Hoffman! We had a relaxing photo session in the shrubbery…Please find below the results! With a sincere THANKS to Francesca & Olivia for assisting me!

Olivia, Anna & Nneka [Edinburgh, 2021]

“Don’t walk in front of me… I may not follow
Don’t walk behind me… I may not lead
Walk beside me… just be my friend” – Abert Camus

A great opportunity was given again to me to take portraits of these girls together! Not only they were good fun, this allowed also me to grow up with my photography, by organising the space and coordinating their group portraits. We met on a grey May day at the Botanics, and even under a dull sky, these young women enlightened our outdoor studio, letting shine their sparkling personalities! Enjoy these beautiful memories!

Stéphanie [Edinburgh, 2021]

After six months, I have picked up my camera again, halleluja! Stéphanie is a dear friend from France who lives in Edinburgh, working as a bookseller. I asked her whether I could take some portraits of her. At the beginning she was super reticent at the idea, as she felt that she was not the “most suitable” model however, after some persuasion and turning the shoot into a game, helped her to break the ice! She is a reliable, good natured, patient, helpful and “human” person who always has a reassuring effect on me! I really like her and was very excited to work with her. She has an artistic vein and I believe that in some pictures she could pass as a poet in total communion with nature, at the Botanics

William [Edinburgh, 2020]

I am proud of this shoot for several reasons. William is a friend and I really wanted to have him pose for me since he is such a good model! Also, very rarely I work with male models, so for me it was extremely exciting. We met at the Botanic Gardens …in the Glasshouse!! We had the chance to spend a couple of hours in this magic jungle, surrounded by nature and silence (well, we spotted a couple of small and cheerful permanent residents, like a robin – singing fearlessly just a meter from us – and a black purring cat!). I have added them in the post below. In the end we got a few natural and unpretentious portraits. William fits perfectly into the surrounding nature and the colors enhance the shoot!

Francesca [Edinburgh, 2020]

Francesca’s laugh precedes her. She is a beautiful woman but I believe that she reaches her zenith when she smiles. In early November 2020 we gathered in Portobello, as I wanted to take some headshots of her. We were joined there for a chat and a walk by a couple of friends, who eventually worked as unpaid assistants during our photo session! We set up on the beach a white bed sheet as background, with the hope that this would turn into a great asset for the final result …Well, that did not work out as expected but it was fun!! Francesca is gorgeous, she reminds me of an actress from the 70s or the 80s with her beautiful, thick, wavy hair and warm-hearted charming smile! Enjoy these lovely, “chilly” memories!

And a Thank You note to all my assistants over the years:

It is helpful to have assistants during a shoot…on the one hand it makes you feel “important”, whilst on the other it is just practical! I enjoy having people around while I work, even although it can be a bit more difficult to focus. It can never be taken for granted that a good quality final result can be obtained but, I can tell you that making a shoot more interactive is positive and stimulating! In the case of the pictures below I praise my brave assistants who were freezing & desperate for a hot coffee!!

Adele & Cloe [Parma, 2020]

Photo-shooting even when your subjects keep on smiling, but what is making them laugh?

Following the example of an artsy and caring super-Momma, these beauties are growing fast and well. They are now two sparkling teenagers: both charming and strong-minded, artistic wise, they are showing off to be talented! They are happy and Yes, they love each other! It is a pleasure for me to document their life through the different stages 📸

Olivia, Anna, Elena & Nneka [Edinburgh, 2020]

I met Olivia at the beginning of the pandemic, we were colleagues in a call centre. I can tell that she was the best gift of that year to me. She only worked in the company for a few months before starting university (yep, she is 18 years younger than me!), but when we met the sparkle of friendship and understanding clicked, and we have stayed in touch since then. I have always appreciated her good nature and good faith, the sense of family & friendship that she has, her open-heartedness. Her affection lifts me up and her zest for life is skyrocketing! She also has a deep connection with photography, thanks to her mother!

I took pictures of her in November 2020. She had brought some of her friends with her, at the Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh. The setting was outstanding with such beautiful autumn colors and it was intriguing to watch them acting more as a knit family rather than friends! Enjoy these beautiful memories (and the short video below)!

and that came as a GOOD surprise…Olivia & Necka on PhotoVogue!

If you believe that this is a studio portrait, then you are wrong! It was taken outdoors at the Botanics on a cold day!! Another friend supported the black drape and we created an improvised studio setting.

Is their pose provocative? I don’t think so. This portrait reminds me of an old daguerreotype taken during the American civil war, two friends standing together, lost in time and almost sharing the same destiny…

The girls were just outstanding and they got a bit emotional when I told them that the shot had been selected for publication by PhotoVogue!

Thank you, dear Editors, for our shared delight Alessia Glaviano, Chiara Bardelli Nonino & Francesca Marani!!
